NC v. CARRUTH (2000)

Former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth, 26, faces the death penalty for allegedly plotting to kill his pregnant girlfriend in November 1999. Carruth’s son, Chancellor, was delivered via C-section the night his mother, 24-year-old Cherica Adams, was gunned down in her car. Carruth claims he had nothing to do with the murder, but prosecutors say he conspired with three men to kill Adams because he did not want the baby she was carrying. The defense argues Van Brett Watkins killed Adams in a fit of anger following a prior argument with Carruth.
